First successful tour to the southpole by Roald Amundsen
In early 1911 the Norwegian Roald Amundsen sailed into Antarctica's Bay of Whales. In October he and his rival Scott set off using sleigh dogs. December 14th, 1911, he won the race to the Pole and returned to base camp late January.
