First successful tour to the southpole by Roald Amundsen
In early 1911 the Norwegian Roald Amundsen sailed into Antarctica's Bay of Whales. In October he and his rival Scott set off using sleigh dogs. December 14th, 1911, he won the race to the Pole and returned to base camp late January.

Less luck for the Brittish Robert Falcon Scott
His motor sleds broke, the ponies had to be shot, the dog teams sent back. Scott and 4 companions continued on foot. January 18th 1912, they reached the pole. A storm trapped Scott and 2 survivors, 11 miles from base camp. Scott's body was found later.
